The Center's publications program is well coordinated with the activities of the Center, producing published materials that examine the most important aspects of oceans law and policy. Martinus Nijhoff annually publishes the Annual Conference Proceedings, and they are available for purchase at Brill Academic Publishers.
In recent years, the Center's publications efforts have centered around the highly-praised seven-volume series, United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982: A Commentary. These volumes provide an objective analysis of the individual provisions of that Convention. The Commentary was acknowledged in the first decision of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea as the "most authoritative" source on the 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea. These volumes are also available for purchase at Brill Academic Publishers. The seventh volume featuring the consolidated Convention itself and an index was published in 2011.
The Center has published International and United States Documents on Oceans Law and Policy, a five-volume collection of major documents relating to oceans law and policy, and contributes to the publication of the Marine Affairs Bibliography. This valuable collection is produced by the University of Virginia Law Library in cooperation with the Dalhousie Law School and the Oceans Institute of Canada and the Center for Oceans Law and Policy. The UVA Law Library also houses the Newlin Collection, a large archive of oceans documents and publications, both contemporary and historical.
